ACHIEVEMENTS

What we have been able to do

Global Child Hope is a member of several networks formed around issues that concern the welfare of children. Such networks include:

  • GCH is also a member of the Somalia Aid Coordination Body (SACB) , a platform for co-ordination of international aid to Somalia.

The body provides a forum for all partners to discuss humanitarian assistance, rehabilitation and development issues affecting Somalia.
Under SACB, GCH sit in the following groups

  • HIV/AIDS and F.G.M. Working Group
  • HIV/AIDS Communication Task Force
  • F.G.M. Core Groups’ Forum

 

Global Child Hope took part in the production of a documentary on female genital mutilation (FGM) in Kenya. The documentary, entitled ‘The Day I will Never Forget’ was prepared in collaboration with a British filmmaker Kim Loginotto.

 

The documentary has been making rounds in international Film Festival circuits, picking rave commendations and awards, among them Amnesty International’s DOEN Human Rights Award. The documentary was screened at Sundance Film Festival (in USA) and aired by HBO, a division of Time Warner Entertainment Company. Anti-FGM electronic media campaign network also screened the documentary, ‘The Day I Will Never Forget’ in villages and schools to create FGM awareness among the youth and the general public in North Eastern province

 

GCH organized several workshops to counter child labour in Mandera district and established community child labour committees to help monitor and address incidents of child labour in the district.

 

Global Child Hope has in the past organized human rights education and training workshops in North Eastern Province of Kenya to create community awareness on children and women rights. GCH has also organized advocacy campaigns to change communities’ negative altitude and perception against women among the pastoralist communities living in the province.

 

Global Child Hope has previously organized a number of public information forums to campaign against the growing cases of child and women trafficking across the Somalia-Ethiopia border and also from the border towns of Moyale, Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa and Mandera districts to cities and major towns of Kenya.

 

Participated in the drafting of Children Act, 2001 in Kenya. Launched Free Primary Education Campaign among the pastoralist communities living in North Eastern Province of Kenya so as to encourage parents to take advantage of the free primary education in Kenya and educate their children, especially the girl child.
